PETALING JAYA

A total of 342 convicts nationwide applied to the Federal Territories Pardons Board (FTPB) between 2006 and 2024 for their sentences to be reduced, the postponement of sentencing, or the grant of a full pardon.

Law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said told the Dewan Rakyat that of these, 106 received a full pardon.

“Meanwhile, 44 convicts had their sentences reduced,” she said in a written reply.

She said the remaining 192 applications were rejected.

Azalina was responding to a question by Chow Yu Hui (PH-Raub), who asked about the number of convicts as of January 2025 who had applied to FTPB to have their sentences remitted, suspended, or reduced.

No breakdown was provided of the crimes the convicts had committed.

To a supplementary question on how long applicants had to wait for a decision from the pardons board, Azalina said it would depend on the application and the regularity of the board’s meetings. - FMT
