Pakatan Harapan’s new Kedah chairman, Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, says PH and Barisan Nasional consider themselves to be the “government-in-waiting” in Kedah.
Saifuddin confirmed his appointment as Kedah PH chairman on Feb 7, replacing Mahfuz Omar, who held the position since 2022.
“Recently, we took the opportunity to discuss how we (PH and BN) can establish ourselves as a credible and effective opposition in Kedah,” he said. ”At the same time, we are preparing to be the government-in-waiting,” New Straits Times quoted him as saying.
Among his first moves as state party leader is a convention of the federal unity coalition in Sungai Petani on Saturday, at which about 1,000 members of the two coalition allies are expected to attend.
PH with 3 seats forms the opposition in Kedah while Perikatan Nasional forms the state government with 33 seats.
Saifuddin, a former Lunas assemblyman, said it was too early to discuss contesting a state assembly seat in Kedah as he is currently focused on leading Kedah PH.
In the 2023 state elections, PH won in Kota Darul Aman (DAP), Bakar Arang (PKR) and Sidam (PKR), while coalition partner BN lost in every seat contested. - FMT
