PUTRAJAYA: No company can be established under any government agency without approval from the highest level, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said the decision was taken following losses made by some companies under various government agencies.
"This is necessary, we must do it because it embodies institutional reform," he said.
Anwar also said that a proposal to streamline several government agencies would be tabled at an upcoming cabinet meeting, with a final decision to be made following discussions.
Former Treasury secretary-general Datuk Seri Asri Hamidon has been tasked with putting forward several proposals for the streamlining of certain government agencies, which will then be submitted to the Chief Secretary to the Government.
"I have assigned the former Secretary-General of the Treasury (Asri) to put forward proposals for streamlining certain agencies before submitting them to the Chief Secretary to the Government. I will make a decision once it is presented at the cabinet meeting in the near future," Anwar said in his speech at the Finance Ministry's monthly assembly.
In September last year, Anwar announced the creation of the Secretariat for the Rationalisation Study of Federal Statutory Bodies, aimed at addressing overlapping functions and uncontrolled spending.
The secretariat, which will be managed by the Finance Ministry, has received the cabinet's approval and will begin its work immediately as part of the civil service reforms.
Following the announcement, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar confirmed that Asri would head the secretariat. - NST
