That meeting between Presidents Trump and Putin will most likely happen in Saudi Arabia - not Munich. It will take place soon, not in six months time. Choosing Riyadh as such an important venue sends a strong signal that both the US and Russia are Saudi friendly - which makes Saudi Arabia coming onboard the Abrahamic Accords much easier (and faster).
JD Vance said quite clearly in Munich that China and Russia are not the enemies of the US (and Europe). JD Vance said Europe's enemies are within themselves. Russia is a close ally of China. If the US and Russia are going to forge a new friendship and partnership by extension it is going to be the USA, Russia and China together as a team.
We are six days away from the German elections on February 23rd and the pro-Russia right wing parties in Germany are leading in the popularity polls. They are polling over 25% of popular support which represents a possible winning chunk in Germany. Lets see what happens.
Europe is in shock. Europe is so upset that Trump and Putin spoke on the telephone for an hour and a half without consulting them first. Then came US Vice President JD Vance's shocker of a speech at Munich where he practically declared that Europe is the real enemy. Russia and China are not. The shocks did not end there. Yesterday Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke on the telephone too - and set the stage for detailed planning for the Trump - Putin summit in Riyadh.
Today Monday 17th February 2025 French President Macron has called for an emergency summit of European leaders in Paris. Recall that Macron's government (rather his prime minister) had to resign after losing a no confidence vote in December 2024. The French have called for Macron to resign as well. Macron is in quite deep shit in France. If this Trump-Putin meeting is a success and the Ukraine War comes to a stop (without Europe's inputs), it is likely that Macron too will have to resign in disgrace. Bienvenue Madame Marine Le Pen.
They do not have too many options. Europe cannot kick America out of NATO. Without the US there is no NATO. They cannot kick out America from the EU because America is not a member of the EU.
Ursula Van Der Lyin the EU president has suggested that the EU set up its own Armed Forces - acknowledging that NATO (with America at the top) is a dead albatross.
I think Ursula should wait for the outcome of the elections in Germany on February 23rd. If the pro-Russia right wing wins the elections, Germany may leave both the EU and NATO. Without Germany there can be no EU and no more NATO.
This is indeed a Yalta moment not just in the history of Europe but in world history.
President Trump still has not spoken to the British prime minister Keir Starmtrooper. The US Vice President JD Vance also did not speak to the British during the 'mutual- admiration-society' meeting in Munich.
Oil and gas will flow again. The world should become a better place.
