SUNGAI PETANI: Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) are actively positioning themselves as the 'government-in-waiting' in Kedah ahead of the next state election.
Newly-minted Kedah PH chairman Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said both coalitions were working to gain public support by offering various initiatives and strategies to secure victory.
"Recently, we took the opportunity to discuss how we in Kedah can establish ourselves as a credible and effective opposition.
"In Kedah, the Unity Government—comprising PH and BN—is in the opposition, while Perikatan Nasional (PN) forms the administration. At the same time, we are preparing to be the government-in-waiting," he told reporters today.
He also confirmed his appointment as Kedah PH chairman, replacing Datuk Mahfuz Omar, who had held the position since 2022.
"By consensus, the coalition has chosen me as the new chairman, replacing Datuk Mahfuz, during a meeting held on Feb 7," he said.
When asked whether his appointment fuelled speculation about contesting a seat in Kedah, Saifuddin said it was still too early to discuss, adding that his current focus was on leading the party's structure.
Meanwhile, he said PH and BN will hold a Unity Government Convention this Saturday in Sungai Petani, with around 1,000 members from both coalitions expected to attend. - NST
