KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested an enforcement officer from a government agency for allegedly pocketing RM100,000 in bribes.
The bribes were supposedly received from transport companies to avoid taking action against company-owned lorries that committed traffic offences.
The male suspect, in his 40s, was detained at around 8pm last night while giving his statement at the Sabah MACC office.
This arrest follows the recent detention of an enforcement assistant by Sabah MACC last Tuesday.
According to sources, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had been soliciting bribes from approximately 30 transport companies between Oct 2023 and Nov 2024.
"The suspect received monthly payments ranging from RM300 to RM3,000, totaling an estimated RM100,000," the source said.
"The money served as an incentive for not taking action against company-owned lorries that violated road regulations."
Meanwhile, Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy, when contacted, confirmed the arrest.
"The case is being investigated under Section 1(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
"The suspect was released on bail after giving his statement, with a guarantee of RM20,000 and one surety," he added. - NST
