MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki has lauded Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s clear vision for eradicating corruption in the country.
He also acknowledges there are big challenges ahead facing the anti-graft agency, especially in improving the country’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI) score.
“The prime minister has a clear vision in the fight against corruption and financial support as well as the increase in officers, we commend him,” Bernama reported him as saying during the MACC Ceremonial Dinner 2025 at the World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur last night.
Also present were Anwar and Chief Secretary to the Government Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
However, Azam expressed his commitment to continue to empower MACC with the full support of the government.
“This is a challenge on how we are working to increase the CPI towards the prime minister’s vision to be ranked 25th out of 180 countries within 10 years,” he added.
On Feb 11, Malaysia’s position in the global Corruption Perception Index (CPI) for last year remained stagnant at the 57th spot as it again scored 50 out of 100 points.
Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) believes that the ranking might have been affected by a series of “discounts” and discharges not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) given in high-profile court cases.
TI-M president Muhammad Mohan said they believe Malaysia could have scored more points to improve its position if the incidents had not occurred.
AI in graft-busting
Meanwhile, Azam said the MACC will adopt new technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), to strengthen efforts in combating corruption in the country.
He added that since the agency’s rebranding from the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA), significant changes have been made to its legal framework and structure, granting it greater independence in investigations.
“MACC fully supports the vision and commitment of the prime minister and the government, not only in eradicating corruption and reducing national leakages but also in enhancing investigations through cutting-edge technologies such as digitalisation and AI,” Azam added.
