Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah today consented to the appointment of Senator Salehuddin Saidin as the new Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) chairperson, effective March 1.
The Selangor Royal Office, in a statement, said that Salehuddin (above, right) is replacing Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof, who requested to step down due to health reasons.
It said His Royal Highness consented to Aziz’s request effective Feb 28.
It added that Sultan Sharafuddin ordered the position to be filled immediately as His Royal Highness is deeply concerned about the state’s administration, management, and development of Islamic affairs.
Salehuddin, 62, is a former head of the Classified Case/Public Interest Unit at the Attorney-General’s Chambers and was appointed a Dewan Negara senator on July 22 last year for a two-year term.
The Perak native holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Universiti Malaya.
Salehuddin has also been a member of Mais since 2007, a Selangor Council of the Royal Court member since 2016, and has been part of the special committee to review the competency of the state legislative assemblies to enact Islamic laws since 2013.
Sultan Sharafuddin thanked Aziz for his dedication and excellence in carrying out his duties as Mais chairperson since his appointment in 2021, praying for Aziz to always be in Allah’s protection and blessed with recovery and good health.
