At least two individuals will be charged soon in connection with the ongoing Sabah corruption scandal, said MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki today.
“I will announce in a very short time the charging of the individuals in the case,” Azam was quoted as saying by The Star after attending the second MACC Law Enforcement Accredited Programme Convocation in Bangi.
He also hinted at the possibility of further prosecutions against other individuals.
This comes amid mounting pressure on authorities to act over the scandal, which involves several Sabah politicians.
On June 6, Azam confirmed that MACC had completed its investigation paper on a video allegedly implicating a Sabah state assemblyperson.
The paper was submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for review two weeks earlier.
On April 29, Azam said forensic analysis was being finalised on 10 video clips submitted to the commission on March 11.
The clips allegedly implicate Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor and several state assemblypersons.
The whistleblower behind the videos, a 36-year-old businessperson identified as Albert, submitted more evidence on the same day.
This reportedly included nearly 300 pages of material comprising witnesses’ names, WhatsApp conversations, call logs, and documents.
Alleged bribes for exploration licences
Since November last year, Albert has released a series of video recordings and messages purportedly showing Sabah lawmakers, including the state assembly speaker, involved in corrupt dealings.
Albert claimed he had paid bribes to obtain mineral exploration licences but decided to come forward after the licences were revoked.
In response, Hajiji accused the whistleblower of colluding with parties seeking to destabilise his administration.
Albert, meanwhile, faces counter-allegations of attempting to monopolise the state’s mining sector through fraudulent means. - Mkini
