Artist called in for questioning for insulting Islam

Prominent artist Anurendera Jegadeva was called in for questioning by police today following allegations by pro-Umno bloggers that his work had insulted Islam.
The artist, popularly known as J. Anu, had his collection of paintings which were exhibited at a retail mall in Solaris Dutamas seized by police.
The painting at the heart of the storm features the phrase "I is for Idiot" on top of the image of a chimpanzee riding a bicycle, a jet fighter pilot in front of the words "Mission Accomplished", and a red and white striped flag with a Jolly Roger skull and crossbones.
The painting is said to be the artist's way of criticising the war on terror in Iraq waged by former United States president George W. Bush in 2002.
A number of pro-Umno blogs jumped on the issue, posting strong comments. A police report was also lodged on the alleged insult to Islam.
Sentul police chief Assistant Commissioner Zakaria Pagan said investigation papers had been opened under Section 298 of the Penal Code, for intent to wound the religious feelings of any person.
Anu's exhibition, held at Publika and titled "M50 Selamat Hari Malaysia", is in recognition of the nation's independence day celebrations this Saturday.
Anu had his statement recorded at the Sentul police headquarters in Jalan Kepong.
He is expected to be released on police bail later.
