Dr Mahathir Mohamad should learn a lesson from the twin by-elections, which saw BN win with a bigger majority than in the 2013 general election, said former chief justice Abdul Hamid Mohamad.
The former premier should not tarnish his integrity and lifelong achievements by joining the opposition, Hamid told Utusan Malaysia today.
"It is better if he takes a rest so the people can still respect him. Don't make it hard for people to respect him," the former top judge was quoted as saying.
Mahathir campaigned for Amanah's candidates in the Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar by-elections.
Despite his efforts, BN won in the Kuala Kangsar by-election with a 6,969-vote majority compared with a 1,082-vote majority in the 2013 general election.
In Sungai Besar, the ruling coalition won with a 9,191-vote majority compared with only a 399-vote majority in 2013.
However, the improved majorities were largely the result of a split in votes between PAS and Amanah.
'BN must clean up act'
Meanwhile, Hamid warned BN and Umno leaders not to let their victory in the twin polls get to their heads, lest they repel people with their arrogance.
He said the victory was a reminder from voters that the party leadership must clean up its image of corruption to gain more support.
"When BN is strong, non-Malays especially the Chinese community will re-evaluate their situation and this may cause them to change their stance and vote for BN, for fear of losing out," he was quoted as saying. -Mkini
