KUALA LUMPUR - Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today that Barisan Nasional’s (BN) latest electoral victories would do nothing to change his mind about the administration or his agenda to unseat its leader.

Even as his allies in the opposition continue to smart over their humiliating defeat, the former prime minister vowed to stay the course, saying BN’s outstanding performance has only motivated him further.

“They’ve asked for my stand now that they have won. My position hasn’t changed. It may have even grown stronger,” Dr Mahathir wrote today in his latest blog post.

The leader waxed lyrical about the many problems allegedly plaguing the administration, saying he would never change his mind to support power abuse and wrongful use of law.

He added that he would never accept the concept of “Cash is King”, a concept he claimed was rooted in corruption.

Referring to BN’s victories in Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar, Dr Mahathir then suggested that some were swayed by election goodies and handouts, and gave up their dignity to support the ruling pact.

“Those asking me for my stand should ask themselves what happened to their dignities that they can be so proud of a victory that came from cheating, open corruption and clear abuse of power.

“To me, the effort to cleanse the Malaysian government will continue in whatever way possible,” he said.

BN cruised to easy victories in Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar last Saturday, beating the fragmented opposition with four-figure vote margins in both seats.

During the polls, PAS and its offshoot Amanah from Pakatan Harapan only managed to garner 6,902 and 7,609 voters in Sungai Besar and 5,684 and 4,883 votes in Kuala Kangsar respectively.

Their stunning defeat was despite Dr Mahathir’s presence on the campaign trail, a sign observers said indicated that the former prime minister alone cannot cause a change in government in the next federal polls.

For BN, however, the results showed voters’ rejection of Dr Mahathir’s brand of politics and his campaign against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

BN’s strategic communications director Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan in a statement urged the 91-year-old to take his cue from the polls outcome and “retire quietly” to spare himself further ridicule. - Malay Mail
