MCMC says it is unable to totally ban pornographic websites and applications, and wants people to report those who spread such content.
SERI KEMBANGAN: Malaysian schoolchildren access pornographic websites for approximately 20.9 hours a week, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has revealed.
MCMC outreach implementation department director K Juslly Elis said 94.2% of children and teenagers between the ages of 10 and 17, have been exposed to pornographic content on the Internet.
“Of those who have watched pornography, 2.6% saw the content on purpose. However, only 6.4% informed their parents and teachers about it,” he said.
According to Pornhub, Malaysia is ranked eighth in a list of 21 countries where pornography is most watched.
The three top countries for online pornography surfing were Thailand, Hong Kong and the Philippines, while Ireland, Spain and Denmark were ranked at the bottom of the list.
Meanwhile, Juslly said there is now a wider prevalence of chat applications being used by children, as well as teenagers, after school to surf pornographic sites.
“While we are unable to monitor all such applications, we hope that more volunteers will come forth to report those who spread such harmful content,” Juslly said.
Based on the reports received, MCMC takes action by blocking Facebook or personal sites used to spread such harmful content, he said.
Juslly added that among the other initiatives taken by MCMC was the promotion of safe surfing through the “Click Wisely” programme.
The programme is designed to educate the public on being safe, using the Internet in a positive way and being alert towards cyber-crime. - FMT
