Kuala Lumpur Mayor suggests business owners be allowed to renew their licences only if they had put up national flag in conjunction with Merdeka Day celebrations.
PETALING JAYA: Can patriotism be enforced as law and made compulsory? That is the idea being considered by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) in view of the upcoming Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day celebrations.
KL mayor Mohd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz told Berita Harian that DBKL is currently reviewing the terms and conditions for licence renewal in the city and possibly making it compulsory for property owners and business owners to fly the national flag.
“We are thinking of adding this condition that business operators and property owners must put up the Jalur Gemilang, so as to instill the patriotic spirit during the celebration of Merdeka Day on Aug 31,” he was quoted as saying by the Bahasa Malaysia daily, after launching DBKL’s Jalur Gemilang flag-raising campaign on Monday.
Amin lamented that many business and property owners did not take the matter of flying the national flag seriously despite having been given the flags for free.
“We should be like the people in Indonesia, where they take the initiative to fly the national flag at their respective premises. They are very proud of it.
“We should do the same to express our love for the country,” he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.
At the event held in the DBKL headquarters, Amin presented 1,000 Jalur Gemilang of various sizes to motorists, government and private agencies, NGOs, clubs and schools. It was part of the 55,000 flags that the local government authority had made for distribution.
Earlier this month, Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Mansor was also reported to have complained about the poor response among city folks in hoisting the national flag, ahead of the Merdeka Day celebration. - FMT
