The Barisan Nasional government is losing credibility by treating royal commissions of inquiry (RCIs) as political power play, DAP’s Lim Kit Siang said today over news that Putrajaya was ready to set up an RCI to probe the Memali incident some 30 years ago.
The party’s parliamentary leader called it a “farce” for the government to hold RCIs out of vengeance against former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, instead of pursuing the glaring issue of scandals involving 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
“If Malaysia has come to the stage when even the formation of RCIs can become a political power play, the government concerned has lost all authority, credibility and legitimacy and should be replaced.
“By all means have RCIs into Bank Negara foreign exchange losses thirty years ago, or into the Memali tragedy more than 30 years ago, but if there is no RCI into the elephant in the room, the 1MDB scandal, then all these RCIs are reduced to a farce and gross abuses of power,” Lim said in a statement today.

Lim Kit Siang is panicking. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad organised a Nothing to Hide 1.0 debate to run down Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and they got hit with a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on the US$13 billion Bank Negara forex disaster (estimated at RM130 billion in today’s value). Then Mahathir organised a Nothing to Hide 2.0debate and they are going to get hit with a RCI on the Memali murders.
If they continue organising Nothing to Hide 3.0, Nothing to Hide 4.0, Nothing to Hide 5.0, etc., then there are going to be RCIs on the RM2 billion bailout of Mahathir’s son, the Perwaja fiasco, the Petronas Twin Towers scam, and many more. And if this happens Kit Siang is going to look like one dumb Chinaman for making Mahathir the ‘Top Dog’ of Pakatan Harapan.
Kit Siang is pretending that he welcomes the RCIs on the Bank Negara forex disaster and the Memali murders. He cannot say otherwise since he was the one who has been screaming for more than 20 years that these RCIs be held. But then at that time he wanted these RCIs so that he could hit Mahathir and hopefully in the process bring down Umno and Barisan Nasional as well.

But Kit Siang no longer wants to hit Mahathir because if Mahathir is brought down then that will hurt DAP and Pakatan Harapan and not hurt Umno and Barisan Nasional. Kit Siang just wanted the RCI as a political weapon against Umno and Barisan Nasional. And that is why today Kit Siang is saying that the RCI should not be used as a political weapon against Mahathir — because Kit Siang also wanted the RCI as a weapon against Mahathir back when Mahathir was DAP’s enemy.
Malays call this senjata makan tuan (killed by your own weapon). Kit Siang wanted the RCI as a senjata against Mahathir, Umno and Barisan Nasional. He does not want the RCI as a senjata against Mahathir, DAP and Pakatan Harapan. So Kit Siang is pretending that he is not opposed to any RCI on the Bank Negara US$13 billion forex disaster or the Memali murders per say but is merely opposed to these RCIs if one is not also done on 1MDB.
But then the PAC has already investigated 1MDB. There was no PAC investigation on the Bank Negara forex disaster or the Memali murders. So why does Kit Siang still need a RCI on 1MDB? And is DAP not a member of the PAC? And has Tony Pua and Tan Seng Giaw, the DAP members of PAC, not already spoken millions of words regarding 1MDB and what the PAC discovered?
Tony Pua is a one-man RCI and has spoken so much about 1MDB that no other RCI is required
What new information can a RCI on 1MDB discover that the PAC has not already discovered? And what new information can the public be informed about which Tony Pua and Tan Seng Giaw have not already informed the public about? In fact, even if the RCI on 1MDB is held, all they need to do is to interview just Tony Pua alone and that would be enough. Tony Pua has spoken so much about 1MDB and about what the PAC discovered that 20 other witnesses could never match Tony Pua alone.
The RCI is required only if information has been hidden and the truth has not been revealed (like in the case of the Bank Negara US$13 billion forex disaster and the Memali murders). In 1MDB’s case the PAC has already uncovered the truth and nothing has been hidden and Tony Pua, Tan Seng Giaw, and many other DAP and PKR people, have spoken on the matter at great length and there is nothing new to discover and nothing new to talk about.
In fact, today Bank Negara tried to keep the RCI investigation a secret and a behind-closed-doors affair so that Malaysians will never get to know the truth behind the US$13 billion Bank Negara forex disaster. In other words, they want the RCI investigation into the US$13 billion Bank Negara forex disaster to be classified so that no one will know what really happened.

Why do they want this? Why do they want the RCI investigation into the US$13 billion Bank Negara forex disaster to be classified so that no one will get to know what happened?
Was the PAC investigation into 1MDB a secret? Did Tony Pua, Tan Seng Giaw, and many other DAP and PKR people, not reveal the details of the PAC investigation into 1MDB? Why do they want the investigation into 1MDB made public but the investigation into the US$13 billion Bank Negara forex disaster kept a secret?
The RCI into the US$13 billion Bank Negara forex disaster and the RCI into the Memali murders are going to hurt Mahathir big-time. And by extension this is going to hurt Kit Siang, DAP and Pakatan Harapan as well. And it was Kit Siang who decided to invite Mahathir to DAP’s convention on 4th December 2016 so that they can present him as DAP’s Malay face.

That invariably turned Pakatan Harapan from a DAP-led Pakatan Harapan into Pakatan Ali Baba. But Kit Siang thought this was good because it helped counter Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak’s message to the Umno assembly a day earlier that the next general election is a contest between the DAP-led Pakatan Harapan and an Umno-led Barisan Nasional.

Normally one would like to end their career at the height of their career. Mahathir is ending his career while scraping the bottom and Kit Siang is about to join Mahathir down in the gutter. This is just like the case of Muhammad Ali. After ending his career while at the top, Muhammad Ali decided to come back for one last shot and lost. Mahathir did the same. He retired and then came back for one last shot. And Mahathir lost as well, just like Muhammad Ali.
