The MACC has given Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng an ultimatum - apologise within 48 hours or face action.
It made the call in response to Lim's remarks at a press conference yesterday, where he accused the commission of “illegally” arresting Penang exco member Phee Boon Poh.
"The MACC takes the remark 'illegal detainment by the MACC' seriously, and views it as malicious slander aimed to tarnish the MACC's name and reputation," it said in a statement this evening.
Phee was arrested on Aug 10 for issuing letters to the Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) to halt action on an illegal carbon filtering factory in Bukit Mertajam.
MACC intended to remand Phee for five days from Aug 12, but the High Court in Penang on Aug 14 ordered that Phee be released.
The commission, however, said the High Court, in ordering Phee's release, did not state that the arrest was unlawful.
It added that as the MACC was appealing the High Court's decision, any comments regarding the arrest could be deemed as sub judice and contempt of court. -Mkini
