CHINESE carmaker Geely is looking for a suitable candidate to chair the Proton board, said Geely vice-president Yang Xueliang.
Yang told Chinese automotive news portal Gasgoo that Geely was still looking although it is rumoured that Li Chunrong of Honda is soon to fill the vacancy.
Li is the Dongfeng Honda Engine company director and executive vice-general manager.
“Geely is recruiting and choosing Proton’s chairman across the globe, and Li Chunrong has the intention to join. But the position is vacant currently,” Yang was reported as saying.
On June 23, Geely took over 49.9% equity of Proton and 51% of Lotus Group from DRB-Hicom to become foreign strategic partner to Proton.
Berita Harian quotes a source saying the agreement between DRB-Hicom and Geely gave the latter the right to pick two chairman positions in Proton.
“The agreement gives Geely control over Proton’s operations while the Proton board remains under DRB-Hicom.
“But the appointment of top management have not been an issue in the past. It should be understood that the candidates need not come from China or overseas and the existing management team may also be retained.
“Of course, Geely will appoint individuals who can successfully implement the Proton transformation plan because that requires people with capability and expertise in the field,” the source said.
