Sarawak’s newly-established state oil company, Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros), only has one Dayak as a board member despite Dayaks forming the majority in Sarawak, DAP grassroots leader Abdul Aziz Isa says.
“The composition of the Petros board shows a racial imbalance and once again, the majority is being grossly under-represented while the minority are overrepresented,” Abdul Aziz said in a statement today.
He said Sarawak always boasts about its diversity, but the same cannot be said about government-related matters.
“When it comes to the state civil service, statutory bodies or government-linked companies (GLCs), it does not reflect the same diversity.
"It seems that the current state government would continue with such policy of a racially-biased nature, as what is practised by their big brother, Umno, in Peninsular Malaysia,” said Abdul Aziz, who is the aide to Sarawak DAP leader Chong Chieng Jen.
Petros was set up to allow the state to participate in upstream oil and gas development, particularly in the exploration and extraction within Sarawak’s waters.
Earlier today, Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Abang Openg announced that former state secretary Hamid Bugo (photo above, right) would helm Petros.
The other board members are Muhammad Medan Abdullah, Sharbini Suhaili, Zuraimi Sabki and Heng Hock Cheng.
However, there are still key vacancies to be filled, including the chief executive officer’s position.
Abdul Aziz said that there should be a fair and transparent system in the civil service, statutory bodies, and GLC appointments to instil confidence among the public that meritocracy and inclusiveness were being practised.
“As such, I urge the state government, particularly the chief minister, to consider the Dayaks for management posts as doing so would shield the state government from accusations of discrimination and marginalisation,” he said. - Mkini
