FORMER prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad wants to divide the top leaders in Umno, an Umno Supreme Council member said today.
Azeez Abdul Rahim said Dr Mahathir, who is now the Pakatan Harapan chairman, hoped to drive a wedge between Umno president Najib Razak and vice-presidents Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Hishammuddin Hussein.
“He wants to break up Umno. So he has to split the three heads.
“That is his political angle. That is what I have observed,” the Tabung Haji chairman said in his hour-long speech at the Permatang Pauh Umno division delegates’ meeting in Penang this morning.
Azeez said he had asked Zahid for the truth after Dr Mahathir claimed recently that Zahid had wanted to oust Najib.
“He told me he never said such a thing and that it was Dr Mahathir himself who had said it,” he said.
Azeez said he had challenged Zahid and Dr Mahathir to swear on the Quran that they telling the truth.
“Prove what you said is true and not a big lie,” he said, adding that Zahid had immediately accepted the challenge and was ready to go to a mosque to swear his innocence.
“Is it a problem for Dr Mahathir to also swear on the Quran? Otherwise, we will not know if his claim is true.
“His allegation has gone viral. Even my children have asked me about it… they also want to know how leader number two can try to kill off leader number one.
“It is bad for the party and the country. That is why I made the challenge to both of them yesterday. Over three million party members want to know,” Azeez said.
Azeez said Umno members should not be fooled into thinking that Dr Mahathir would return to head the country when his new party, Bersatu, holds only a parliamentary seat and a state seat.
Pagoh is held by incumbent MP Muhyiddin Yassin, who is Bersatu president; and Ayer Hitam in Kedah by Mukhriz Mahathir, who is Bersatu deputy president.
Police have said they would call up Dr Mahathir for questioning over alleged plan to overthrow Najib
Dr Mahathir is alleged to have suggested that Najib be ousted to Zahid, who claims to have a tape recording of their conversation in 2015, shortly after Zahid became deputy prime minister.
Permatang Pauh Umno chief Mohd Zaidi Mohd Said said both Zahid and Dr Mahathir had to prove they were innocent.
“They must prove the allegations against them are not true.
“Zahid has shown his commitment by saying he will take the oath and let MACC investigate him.
“It is up to Dr Mahathir to decide if he has the courage to do the same,” he said. –
