PARLIAMENT | The police have submitted their investigation paper on death threats received by Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah and five others to the Attorney-General's Chambers.
"The investigation paper was submitted to the deputy public prosecutor on April 12, 2017," Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said in a parliamentary written reply in his capacity as the home minister.
However, Zahid said, the goverment was still waiting for a report on the threat issued through WhatsApp from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Maria received the death threat one month before last year’s Nov 19 Bersih 5 rally.
The death threat was in the form of an image of a man shrouded in all black and holding a dagger, with one hand on the scruff of the neck of Maria.
The text ended with a warning, with the sender claiming that they know who Maria’s family and her children are, together with the pictures of the MyKads of her sons.
The person or persons responsible for the threats also warned Maria about going ahead with the Bersih 5 rally and threatened to "slaughter" and "behead" her, and called her cohorts "anjing".
Besides Maria, her predecessor Ambiga Sreenevasan and Bersih secretary Mandeep Singh also received similar death threats in October 2016.
In November, 2016, the three received another death threat, indicating that they would be beheaded.
The police investigated the case under Section 507 of Penal Code for criminal intimidation through anonymous communication.
On the threats that took place in November 2016, Zahid revealed that the investigations were yet to completed.
"The police are continuing to investigate the case," he told Ramkarpal Singh (DAP-Bukit Gelugor).
According to the information received, Maria received photoshopped images of herself, her three sons, Bersih Secretariat manager Mandeep Singh and former co-chair of Bersih Ambiga, being beheaded by ISIS on her mobile phone on Nov 11, 2016.
She subsequently lodged a police report on the incident.
Earlier, on Oct 17, 2016, she received violent messages on her mobile phone that threatened her, her sons, Mandeep Singh and Ambiga, and warned her of reprisals if she proceeded with organising the November 19 Bersih 5 rally.
The messages claimed to be from the ‘Islamic State Malaysia’. - Mkini
