Raja Bahrin not hopeful of stern action against ruckus culprits

He recalls light sentences slapped on a group of Umno supporters who attacked Amanah MP, Khalid Samad.
Raja-BahrinPETALING JAYA: An Amanah MP says he has no confidence that culprits behind the ruckus at PPBM’s Nothing to Hide forum in Shah Alam yesterday would be dealt with seriously by the authorities, saying similar incidents in the past saw perpetrators being let off with light fines.
Kuala Terengganu MP Raja Bahrin Shah said in the past, members of a mob who attacked Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad outside Parliment got away with a mere RM100 fine.
“That is how cheap the life of an opposition MP is,” he said, referring to an incident in November last year, when a group of Umno supporters harassed Khalid after his war of words with Barisan Nasional’s Pasir Salak MP, Tajuddin Abdul Rahman.
“The question now is what value is attached to the life of an opposition member named Mahathir Mohamad who is a former prime minister of Malaysia.
“Based on past experience, the lives of opposition members are nearly valueless to the authorities,” he said.
Sparks flew at the “Nothing to Hide” forum organised by PPBM Youth yesterday, after objects were thrown onto the stage while Mahathir was speaking.
Police have detained three youths, aged between 17 and 19.
Raja Bahrin also took to task Prime Minister Najib Razak for not issuing any statement condemning the ruckus, comparing this to US President Donald Trump’s indifference to a recent attack on peaceful protesters by white supremacists in Virginia. - FMT
