YOURSAY | ‘Umno’s deep pockets have it firing on all four cylinders.’
6th Generation Immigrant: To Malaysiakini contributor Rais Hussin - the rakyat on the sidelines, including the rural Malay folks, are watching the supporting trailers leading to the main show that is GE14.
The spate of royal commissions of inquiry (RCIs) being called for or ongoing are the trailers, for even fools can work out that "the more Umno and BN try to dig up the past, the more it will expose their own skeletons" for they were the only one ruling incumbent for 60 years.
Individuals cannot be held responsible when we have a parliament and cabinet managing the country throughout, well except during the National Operations Council (Mageran) period (in the wake of May 13, 1969).
"Jangan meludah ke langit" surely must still be something they should know and remember.
Pretzel Dog: Who is the bright Charlie who thought an RCI on the forex losses would discredit former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad and consequently adversely affect the opposition?
To those of us who belong to the older generation, it is water under the bridge - something unfortunate and regrettable and pointless to further dwell upon.
To the younger generation, I daresay they totally can't be bothered with it as much as an octogenarian would really be bothered with the Great Depression of the 30s.
To them, the 1MDB fiasco is of greater import and of much concern, as it is their generation that will eventually have to make good the tens of billions lost allegedly through criminal misappropriation.
The forex RCI will backfire on those who thought it was a great idea because millions of these younger people would by now have attained that age which would give them the right to vote.
I always say think hard before you poke a hornets' nest.
FairMind: If Mahathir and his team are smart, they can turn the forex RCI tables on Najib and Umno because it will be closely watched by the ordinary Malays.
What the RCI will be digging out will be the dirt of Umno, regardless of who is at fault for the forex losses. All Mahathir needs to do is to cross-examine all the Umno bigwigs during that time. Even the mainstream media would not miss out on the sensational news.
The Malay kampung folks will be able to add together the total losses from the forex scandal and 1MDB and compare them with the difficult lives that they are having now.
Herein lies the god-sent solution and answer to Rais’ “10 and five” equation for Pakatan Harapan.
Clever Voter: Umno has deep pockets to fire on all four cylinders. Months of discrediting Mahathir hasn't worked. Now all of sudden the RCI becomes a convenient tool, and they will realise these will backfire too but at a huge cost.
It would not be a surprise if public institutions are used to coerce, delay or even derail the activities of the opposition. Umno lacks self-confidence. Short of removing the people’s right to vote or even the entire voting system, Umno is running out of ideas.
It is no wonder prominent public figures are starting to question the motives. Expect more of these as panic becomes desperation.
Sleepy: I think the strategy to counter the RCI is working fine, because even though the focus is on Mahathir, it will also invariably focus on Mahathir's achievements and the Malay agenda.
Mahathir knows that age is on his side and he is only a chairperson and adviser to his party and the opposition, hence the RCI is actually "free publicity" for Mahathir and the opposition. A political wily fox indeed.
Anonymous 2436471476414726: The widow of slain religious preacher Ibrahim Mahmud has not forgiven former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for the Memali tragedy. She also said she welcomed a proposed RCI to “serve justice” to those who died during the incident.
If we have to have RCIs for all those shot dead for challenging and threatening to attack the police with weapons, then we may have to hold hundreds, if not thousands, of RCIs.
We hear quite regularly these days of criminals armed with guns or parang refusing to surrender when ordered to. In the end, the police have to neutralise them otherwise the police officers themselves will be hurt or even dead.
Whilst we can sympathise with the widow of Ibrahim Libya, there is no doubt that her late husband and others were not faultless and brought upon themselves the fate that befell them.
To have an RCI on those incidents is ridiculous. Only politicians who are desperate and fearful of losing their grip on power are suggesting such.
Vijay47: I am sorry, Soleha Husin, that I cannot share your grief. Your husband, learned and pious as he is now claimed to have been, was a danger to society. Had he lived, he would have only made the present frightening days even worse.
Do you really think Najib, Umno and PAS care for you, your husband, or the other 13 villagers who died that day? You are all being used for political fodder in this season of royal commissions.
Proarte: Ibrahim Libya was a wanted man. The police sought to arrest him.
If Ibrahim Libya was a peaceful and pious Muslim, why did he allow himself to be barricaded and protected by parang-wielding villagers who did not follow police orders to disperse? If Ibrahim Libya was a law-abiding citizen, why did he not surrender to the police?
The police had no choice but to storm his residence as Ibrahim Libya and his followers were behaving like violent criminals.
Anonymous 2460391489930458: Ibrahim Libya was spreading his cult-like beliefs thereby effectively creating an army of fanatics. It's really hard to blame the authorities for doing what they did.
It's even more outlandish to put the blame on the PM at the time for a few reasons - Dr M was not even directly in charge of police operations; secondly, the situation must have been really tense and surely both parties must have expected some degree of physical engagement; and thirdly, even if Dr M had issued executive orders to engage the group (although it would certainly be hard to prove it without some sort of records to indicate such orders were given), he should be well justified in doing so in the interest of national security.
Perhaps it's a good thing to conduct an inquest into the Memali incident since it may well vindicate Dr M once and for all and expose the true motives of his accusers. - Mkini
