SHAH ALAM: The father of Altantuya Shaariibuu told the High Court today that his daughter had travelled to Kuala Lumpur in October 2006 to meet an individual identified as “Razak”.
“I don’t know if it was Abdul Razak Baginda or Najib Razak,” Shaariibuu Setev said when examined by counsel Ramkarpal Singh.
He added that he did not know what “Razak” looked like.
Shaariibuu, a retired professor from the Mongolian National University, said Altantuya met him at his home a few days before she left for Kuala Lumpur.
When Altantuya went to the washroom, he said, he opened her bag and found a photograph of her with two men.
After she returned from the washroom, he asked who the men were.
“She informed me that these were the people she was going to meet in Malaysia,” Shaariibuu said.
He said Altantuya also revealed that she was going to Kuala Lumpur to meet her lover, Razak Baginda, who was a “big man”, and to get money to pay for medical treatment for her handicapped son.
He said he also discovered a flight ticket purchased by Razak Baginda and a receipt for jewellery of about RM11,300, supposedly bought by the same man.
A letter dated March 2, 2006, from Razak Baginda, stating that he had transferred US$18,000 to Altantuya was also found, he said.
Shaariibuu said his daughter was also known as Amina, but details were not provided in the witness statement which was read out through a Mongolian interpreter.
The 69-year-old, who is the second witness in the civil suit, said his daughter worked as a freelance translator and was fluent in Russian.
Altantuya was murdered in October 2006 in the jungles in Puncak Alam near Shah Alam, Selangor. She was shot in the head and her body then blown up with explosives.
Two policemen, Sirul Azhar Umar and Azilah Hadri, who were Najib’s personal bodyguards, were found guilty and sentenced to death for her murder.
Razak Baginda, who was an aide to Najib, was charged with abetting the duo, but later acquitted without his defence being called.
Shaariibuu, his wife Altantsetseg Sanjaa, and Altantuya’s son Mungunshagai have named Razak Baginda, the government, Sirul and Azilah as defendants in the suit.
The family alleges that there was a conspiracy in Altantuya’s murder, and is seeking RM100 million in damages, including dependency claims.
The hearing continues on Monday before justice Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera. - FMT
