GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government today said that 35% of corruption cases in the state involved civil servants who comprised at least 115 out of 325 cases between January and November last year.
State secretary Farizan Darus said 206 of the 325 cases involved workers from the private sector.
In a speech at the monthly civil service members’ assembly at Komtar today, Farizan said of the 325 cases reported in 2018, 68 were for taking bribes, seven for offering bribes, 14 for false claims, 37 for abuse of power, three for money laundering and 196 for miscellaneous graft offences.
He said disciplinary cases in state statutory bodies and state agencies amounted to 44 cases in 2018. These involved absence from work, tardiness, failure to check in and the use of fake medical certificates, among others.
Farizan said at least 52 people were penalised through warnings, fines, forfeiture of emoluments, deferment of pay rise, reduction in pay, and sacking.
He told reporters that he did not have the 2017 numbers at present.
Following the high number of graft cases, he added, the state would raise its target to reduce corruption cases by 40% this year.
He said efforts were also underway to reduce bureaucracy to speed up matters involving state agencies, which he felt would help deter bribery. - FMT
