Pahang ruler Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah, 59, has been elected as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“The Conference of Rulers has a made a decision. The Sultan of Pahang will be the next Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” a high-ranking source close to Istana Negara told Malaysiakini.
National news agency Bernama later quoted the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal Syed Danial Syed Ahmad as confirming this.
Sultan Abdullah, 59, had succeeded his father Sultan Ahmad Shah as the ruler of Pahang on Jan 12.
Sultan Ahmad, 88, is currently undergoing intensive treatment at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur.
Meanwhile, the source also told Malaysiakini that Perak ruler Sultan Nazrin Shah would continue serving as the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Earlier, it was reported that Sultan of Terengganu Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin chaired the rulers’ meeting at Istana Negara in Kuala Lumpur which started at 11.15am.
Eight of the nine rulers were present.
Kelantan’s Sultan Muhammad V, who stepped down as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Jan 6, did not attend.
Previously, it was speculated that Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar might be proclaimed as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong due to Sultan Ahmad’s poor health.
According to the rotation system of the rulers, the Sultan of Pahang is to become the Yang di-Pertuan Agong after Kelantan’s ruler. The Johor ruler is next in line to the Sultan of Pahang. – MKINI
