KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia would do well to be wary of China’s 5G technology, Tun Daim Zainuddin said today as some Western nations — suspecting espionage — ban equipment made by telecommunications giant Huawei.
The federal government adviser added that major technological advancements have further disrupted human life and had implications on international relations.
“And there is good reason to fear the exponential rise of China’s 5G technology,” Daim said in a speech at the inaugural Perwira dialogue by the Ministry of Defence here.
“I’ve discussed previously issues of territorial sovereignty. But today, we also face an encroachment on ‘digital sovereignty’. While the speed of transmission and storage of information has greatly improved our daily lives, we need to stop and question the price we are paying for this convenience.” – Malay Mail
Malaysia targets best internet speed in Southeast Asia by 2022
KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia is looking to have the fastest internet access speed with the 5G platform in Southeast Asia via the Enhanced Malaysia International Internet Gateway High-Speed Broadband, expected to be ready by 2022.
Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the RM5.45 billion project encompassed the installation of the world’s largest optical fibre involving a 110,000km line.
She said the first phase of the project was expected to be ready in November, with the internet line linking Pengerang, Johor, to Putrajaya, where consumers can enjoy a speed of up to one gigabit per second.
“Now, at a speed of 13 megabits per second, it will take 51 minutes to download a 5GB high-definition video, but with the implementation of the project, the video can be downloaded in just eight minutes,” she said in a speech read by Deputy Speaker Mohd Rashid Hasnon at the project launch here today.
