CAMERON HIGHLANDS: Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad today reaffirmed his support for DAP’s M Manogaran, who is representing the ruling coalition in the Cameron Highlands by-election.
Mahathir asserted that the DAP man had the entire PH backing him.
“He is not alone. We are all behind him.
“Yes, sometimes, in an Indian-majority area, people have to support a Malay candidate. Here, the Malays support an Indian.
“If we don’t support them, in other places, they won’t support us and we will lose,” he said referring to people’s reservations about Manogaran’s candidature in a Malay-dominated area.
Mahathir also expressed hope for a win in this by-election considering the warm support he received at the Sungai Koyan Felda settlement.
“We see hope. InsyaAllah, we will do our best,” he told reporters after performing his Friday prayers at the Al Muhajirin mosque here in Sungai Koyan.
When asked about Najib Razak being a “king of trolls”, Mahathir said the former prime minister was merely seeking sympathy from the people.
“He claims that he was ill-treated. When he was prime minister, even those who weren’t charged had to wear the ‘orange jumpsuit’,” he said referring to the lock-up uniform for those detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
“Shafie (Shafie Apdal, Sabah chief minister) wore the orange jumpsuit even before he was charged.
“Everyone else had to wear it. But we gave him an exemption. Let him go ‘free’ for a few months before he is charged.
“Now, he is making up all kinds of stories to get support. Think about it, can this kind of people be trusted?”
Mahathir said although Pahang is administered by BN, the state government may not necessarily be able to take care of people.
“The federal government under BN could not do anything.
“We are not promising anything, but we just want to say that we have power. BN has no power. They cannot do anything.
“We are the federal government. The federal government has more power compared to the state government. The state government is depending on the federal government because they have unsettled debts,” he said. -FMT
