Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has appealed for patience from those questioning whether the government will cancel the RM81 billion East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project.
He assured that Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng would make an announcement on Pakatan Harapan’s final decision, but did not say when this would be done.
“Has Lim Guan Eng made a statement on this? We wait for him lah. [...] Be patient,” he said when asked by the media after an event in Putrajaya this evening.
Pressed on whether this meant the government had yet to decide on the project, Mahathir once again directed the matter at Lim.
“Wait until what Guan Eng says,” he replied.
Lim and Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali recently issued contradictory statements about the ECRL.
Azmin first said that the project had been terminated whereas Lim expressed shock, saying the former might not have access to all details of the discussions on ECRL.
Asked about the confusing signals, Mahathir instead commented on the high level of scrutiny on Harapan.
“Sometimes people make mistakes, we have to understand that this is a new government, the number of mistakes we make is not very many.
“But people notice (them) very much because this is a new government,” he quipped.
Several news reports previously speculated that the government had terminated China state-owned construction giant CCCC’s contracts for the ECRL.
When questioned on the matter while campaigning during the Cameron Highland by-election last week, Lim had declined comment.
"Can I answer this question at a different stage? I am sorry but this (event) is for the Cameron Highlands by-election.
"The government will make an announcement (on the ECRL project) at a more suitable location, if needed," he had said. - Mkini
