Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad recalled that he had presented a first generation Proton Saga to the late Johor ruler Sultan Iskandar Sultan Ismail more than three decades ago.
He told reporters this after being driven to the Senai International Airport in the same blue-coloured car by Sultan Iskandar's son and present Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim this evening.
Responding to a question on how he felt, Mahathir replied: “Very good (for a) 34-year-old car... Kept well. It's a manual (gearbox)... steering was very good. No breakdown.”
“I think it's a good endorsement for Proton. The car is still functioning. It has done 32,000km. It was priced at RM17,000 then, and that is why I was able to give it as a free gift,” he added.
Mahathir, who is the architect behind the national car, had presented the Proton Saga with the number plate 'proton 1' to Sultan Iskandar in Kuala Lumpur in 1985 during his first tenure as prime minister.
Sultan Iskandar was the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Earlier, Mahathir had an hour-long audience with Sultan Ibrahim at the Istana Bukit Serene in Johor Bahru.
Mahathir said both the ruler and him have agreed to be forthright with each other.
“I can communicate with him. We agreed to be frank, say things directly, not keep them hidden. He gave his views and I gave mine,” he added. - Mkini
