KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has appointed former attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali as the chairman of the party’s disciplinary committee, Bernama reported.
Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa said Apandi will succeed Abdul Ghani Othman, the former Johor menteri besar.
Apandi, a former Federal Court judge, was an Umno member from 1982 to 1991. He was also the Youth chief for the Pengkalan Chepa Umno division in Kelantan.
Apandi, who was appointed as AG at the height of the 1MDB controversy in 2015, was heavily criticised over his refusal to bring charges against then prime minister Najib Razak.
In July last year, he rejected an offer from Umno to become a member of the party’s Supreme Council on grounds his appointment would be linked to his actions when he was a judge as well as the AG.
Meanwhile, Umno also appointed former Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Said as the state chairman.
Ahmad will take over from Umno vice-president Mahdzir Khalid, who has been at the helm since July last year. -FMT
