Kayveas: I like 'nice man' Ramli, BN made right choice

CAMERON POLLS | Former deputy minister M Kayveas has lauded BN's decision to field Ramli Mohd Noor as its candidate for the Cameron Highlands by-election on Jan 26.
The disputed MyPPP leader said he knows the former assistant commissioner of police personally after having worked with him in the parliament constituency for the past four years.
He described Ramli, who was the highest ranked Orang Asli police officer in the nation's history, as someone helpful.
Kayveas, who is also contesting the seat, said Ramli would be able to garner both Malay and Orang Asli votes.
“It is the right strategic choice by BN. It is a different strategy by BN. So, of course when they take away an Indian candidate (from MIC), there may be some Indian votes moving (away from BN), but the smallest percentage there are the Indians – 16 percent.
“Compared to the Orang Asli and Malays, they are the largest communities there. The second largest is the Chinese.
“It is a good strategy. Ramli is a good man, a nice man. I like him,” he told Malaysiakini.
Asked how Ramli's presence would affect his chances in the by-election, Kayveas conceded that the main battle for the seat is between Pakatan Harapan and BN.
He said this is because both parties are in power – one in control of the federal government and the other, the Pahang state government.
Kayveas said he is contesting the Cameron Highlands seat in order to make a stand, having lobbied for years to be the BN candidate to no avail.
The former Taiping MP claimed that he had worked hard in Cameron Highlands that the constituents were confident he would be the BN candidate in the last general election.
BN had instead fielded MIC vice-president C Sivarraajh. However, the Election Court had nullified BN's victory after finding elements of corruption, and this resulted in the upcoming by-election.
Now that MyPPP has left BN, Kayveas said it is only right for him to contest the seat since the coalition could no longer instruct him not to do so.
Harapan would field DAP's M Manogaran, who lost to Sivarraajh in the last general election by less than 600 votes, whereas another former BN component party Gerakan might field its Cameron Highlands deputy division chairperson Dr Eddie Edward Tharmaraj. - Mkini
