Our ties with Goldman Sachs ‘limited’, says KL law firm after raid

Law firm Rahmat Lim and Partners says it is unable to hand over documents that are subject to attorney-client confidentiality.
KUALA LUMPUR: The law firm which was raided by police as part of an investigation into Goldmans Sachs’ involvement in the 1MDB scandal said it had only a “limited role” in representing the investment bankers.
This comes after police spent eight hours in Rahmat Lim and Partners’ office in Mid Valley City here, as part of a probe into the issuance of bonds by Goldman Sachs worth US$6.5 billion between 2012 and 2013.
“We had previously acted in a limited role as Malaysian legal counsel for Goldman Sachs in such bond issuances, supporting an international English law firm which was the lead counsel,” the law firm said in a statement, about an hour after police left its premises.
It said it had cooperated with police by handing over non-confidential documents, but said there were documents subject to “attorney-client privilege” which they could not provide to investigators.
“We have provided our fullest co-operation to the police, and remain fully committed to cooperating with them, within the confines of the law,” it added.
Goldmans Sachs was alleged to have hidden information where 1MDB had fully underwritten all amounts related to costs, expenses and damages suffered by the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) in an agreement dated May 21, 2012.
It was alleged to have omitted material facts over fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, who was said to be the operator and key intermediator for 1MDB. -FMT
