Penang federal agency boss arrested for abuse of power

GEORGE TOWN: A senior officer at a federal agency based in Penang here has been accused of abuse of power involving a government kindergarten project worth RM45,472.
According to Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigators, the man, in his late 50s, allegedly proposed his son’s company for the project.
He was arrested at 8.10am today after giving his statement to officers at the MACC headquarters at Northam Road here. He will be brought to the Magistrate’s Court at 2pm for a remand order.
The case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009, for using one’s office or position for gratification. The offence carries a maximum jail term of 20 years, or a fine of five times the value of money solicited.
Yesterday, the Penang government revealed that 35% of corruption cases in the state involved civil servants, who comprised at least 115 out of 325 cases between January and November last year. - FMT
