PMO: Dr M's audience with Johor ruler not related to Agong issue

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's audience with Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar tomorrow is not to discuss the installation of the next Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
A spokesperson from the Prime Minister's Office told Malaysiakinithe sultan had requested for Mahathir to have an audience with him several weeks ago.
It is believed that there are other matters on the agenda to be discussed, which the spokesperson said he has no knowledge of.
"The prime minister's courtesy visit was requested by His Majesty (Sultan Ibrahim) a few weeks ago and as far as I am concerned, there isn't any agenda regarding the Agong (issue),” he added.
News of the audience, which is to take place at Istana Bukit Serene in Johor Bahru, fueled speculation that it could be related to the election of the next Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Reports of the audience surfaced after state monarchs met at Istana Negara and decided that a Conference of Rulers would be convened on Jan 24 to elect the next king.
There had been speculation that Sultan Ibrahim would be made the new Yang di-Pertuan Agong since Pahang ruler Sultan Ahmad Shah, who is next in line, is unwell.
However, it has since been reported that the Regent of Pahang Tengku Abdullah might be installed as the next sultan and therefore become king as well.
On Sunday, it was announced that Kelantan ruler Sultan Muhammad V had stepped down as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Sultan Muhammad V was installed as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Dec 13, 2016, and his reign was scheduled to end in 2021. - Mkini
