GEORGE TOWN: A prepaid reload sales agent pleaded guilty at the Magistrate’s Court today to hurting his two children, aged 8 and 10, by splashing hot water on them at their home in Air Itam last month.
Eddy Noramin Ramli, 42, pleaded guilty when the charges were read out to him under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means.
He admitted the charges for each child. The father could now face a maximum of 10 years jail, fine or whipping for each charge.
Eddy was accused of causing hurt to his eight-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son on Dec 28 at their Kampung Melayu Flats in Air Itam between 1 and 2 am.
The charges on the offence were read out separately, each for his son and daughter.
Eddy’s lawyer Edmund Anthony Hermon requested the court to allow a low bail amount. He said Eddy was the sole provider for his children and wife with a monthly income of RM500 per month.
Magistrate Rasnee Mohd Radzuan allowed RM15,000 bail for each charge, with a condition that the accused wouldn’t go close to the two children he had hurt.
She then set Feb 12 for the next hearing, awaiting a full medical report on the injuries to two children.
Deputy public prosecutor Yasinnisa Begam Seeni Mohideen decided not to charge children’s mother, who was initially arrested along with the accused.
Police had then said the girl was scalded for allegedly stealing RM10.
Later, they clarified it was not the reason why the father threw hot water on her.
In the 1am incident, the police said, the man had just returned from work and was expecting his dinner waiting for him.
“Unfortunately, all the food prepared by his wife had been eaten by his children.
“Hungry and furious, he stormed into the living room where his three older children were sleeping.
“He woke them up before scolding and beating them up. He also took a bowl of hot water from the water filter machine and splashed it on the victim,” Timur Laut police district chief Che Zaimani Che Awang had said.
The mother of children then went missing after a police report was lodged by a neighbour, who thought the girl might have been a victim of abuse.
The father was slapped with an additional charge after the state Welfare Department’s Jan 2 visit revealed that the 10-year-old son was also at the receiving end of his father’s anger.
The hot water had left burn marks on his thigh.
Doctors at the Penang Hospital found scalding on her forearms, right ribcage and parts of the right-hand side of her body. Further checks showed the girl suffered 3% mid-dermal burns. The girl’s condition is reported to be stable. - FMT
