Sacking only? Ramkarpal tells BFM to lodge report over harrassment, rape

PETALING JAYA: Radio station BFM 89.9 which has sacked two of its employees following an internal investigation into allegations of sexual harassment and rape must lodge a police report on the matter, says DAP MP for Bukit Gelugor, Ramkarpal Singh.

"The termination of these employees over the said rape and sexual harassment allegations indicates that there is possibly some truth to the allegations which would certainly expose the culprits to criminal liability," he said.

Ramkarpal said it was a very serious matter which must be addressed immediately.

He urged BFM to take the necessary steps to reveal the outcomes and hand over evidence gathered from its internal investigations to the police for action to be taken.

"In the circumstances, I urge the board of BFM to lodge a police report over the matter forthwith and to assist in police investigations by disclosing their internal investigation reports to the police for the needful to be done.

On Dec 4, 2018, The Star reported that BFM had begun formal investigations into allegations of sexual harassment at the radio station.

The allegations first surfaced through a circulated email of alleged sexual harassment at the radio station involving its employees.

The email, written by a former employee, alleged that the management had not looked into these harassment claims seriously.

After the decision to sack the two employees, BFM founder Malek Ali said the management team acknowledged that more could have been done to proactively gather evidence so that such misconduct could have been addressed in a more timely manner.

“Based on the recommendations of the board, the management team is committed to improving its structure for employees to report any grievances they may have.- Star
