SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government says it has yet to decide whether to increase the water tariff in the state, but assures that any increase will be less than the previous hike in electricity tariff.
Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said the government was still discussing the matter and waiting for feedback from the National Water Services Commission (SPAN).
“I will look at it first, and the state government must identify the best formula (if there is a need to increase the water tariff,” he told reporters here today.
In states like Pahang and Perlis, he said, the water tariff had not been increased for 30 years.
“Selangor has not increased its water tariff for 12 years,” he added. “If it is increased, it will be a reasonable rate which does not burden the people.”
On the possible date of implementation, Amirudin reiterated that the state government was awaiting details from SPAN, which is expected to meet with him soon.
Last Tuesday, Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister Xavier Jayakumar said water tariff rates may be increased in stages this year, in line with the government’s efforts to restructure water supply services in the country.
The Penang government has announced that the water tariff there will be increased by about 20% beginning this year, while Sabah and Johor have decided not to increase their rates. - FMT
