CAMERON POLLS | PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan and vice-president Iskandar Samad today attended the announcement ceremony for BN’s candidate for the coming Cameron Highlands by-election.
During the announcement, both of them sat in the front row, next to the top BN leaders, including Umno acting president Mohamad Hassan and Pahang Menteri Besar Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail.
“They are right in front of you. If they are not going to help, then would they attend?” Mohamad said during the press conference at the Seri Pacific Hotel in Kuala Lumpur today.
He was responding to a reporter’s question on whether PAS would throw their support behind BN for the by-election.
The BN had earlier announced retired police officer Ramli Mohd Noor as its candidate for the Cameron Highlands by-election.
Iskandar later told reporters that PAS machinery would be on the ground in Cameron Highlands to back Ramli.
“We have people who are hardcore PAS voters there.
“We are confident we can actually increase our votes because, at the moment, we see a lot of promises made by our government that have not been fulfilled.
“We are confident that there are a lot of people who areat going to turn over to the opposition,” Iskandar added.
A united opposition
He also said that he sees Ramli (photo) as an “opposition candidate” for the “opposition front”.
“The opposition needs to be together, we cannot have the opposition fighting each other,” he said.
PAS had previously announced that it would sit out of the Cameron Highlands by-election but would support a candidate put up by other opposition parties.
The bulk of the PAS supporters are located in Jelai - one of two state constituencies which make up the Cameron Highlands parliamentary seat.
PAS polled about double the amount of votes Harapan obtained in this area, winning in three of the 12 voting districts in Jelai during the general election.
During the May 9 general election, Cameron Highlands witnessed a five-way tussle, in which PAS candidate Wan Mahadir Wan Mahmud bagged 3,587 votes.
Harapan's candidate for the by-election is DAP's M Manogaran, who lost to MIC's C Sivaraajh by a mere 567 votes in the last general election.
Last November, the Election Court nullified the results due to the commission of corrupt practices and ruled that a by-election be held. - Mkini
