PETALING JAYA: The Public Service Department today clarified that its rationalisation exercise only involved posts that have been redundant for the past two years.
The clarification comes in the wake of a news report that 16,000 civil servants were set to lose their jobs.
In a statement, the department stressed that the exercise will not affect those currently employed by the government.
However, PSD said it will optimise the current workforce in the civil service through various measures.
“This includes redeployment to avoid any overlapping functions and outsourcing among others,” the statement read.
Earlier today, Sinar Harian reported that some 16,000 civil servants were set to be retrenched in line with the government’s policy to reduce wastage by trimming the size of the civil service, which currently stands at 1.6 million.
The Malay daily’s report was based on a circular issued on Nov 27 that it sighted.
PSD went on to state that the rationalisation exercise is not a new initiative and had been implemented since 2015. - FMT
