LIPIS – Rompin Umno division information chief Datuk Seri Maznah Mazlan has described as rude Raub member of parliament Tengku Zulpuri Shah Raja Puji’s action in confronting her and several others at a homestay unit in Pos Lenjang on Sunday.
The Water, Land and Natural Resources deputy minister had allegedly scolded the Rompin Umno division team, which included Maznah, for allegedly tearing off the ruling pact’s flags from a four-wheel-drive (4WD) belonging to a department in the state government.
Maznah claimed she and several Umno division members were resting at the premises when Tengku Zulpuri along with his aides arrived about 7pm.
Tengku Zulpuri, a first-term Raub MP, had confronted them for allegedly tearing the Pakatan Harapan (PH) flag from the vehicle which was believed to belong to the State Forestry department.
“I thought he was very provocative and rude as he repeatedly used the word “kurang ajar”(ill-mannered). He might have wanted us to also become aggressive and retaliate but instead we choose to remain calm.
“When he kept on using the word “kurang ajar”, I tried to pacify him and asked him to be calm. There was little opportunity for us to speak or explain as he kept interrupting….. I told him to keep cool but nothing happened,” she told NSTP when contacted today.
In the three-minute video clip which has since gone viral, Tengku Zulpuri was seen questioning the Umno team for allegedly removing a PH flag from its vehicle saying that if they (Umno) were not happy, then they should have lodged a police report instead of taking things into their own hand.
The heated argument between Tengku Zulpuri and a BN supported later saw both individuals raising their voice before others present at the scene sought to calm them down and and also pulled them apart.
Maznah said prior to the incident, she along with former Senator Datuk Muhammad Olian Abdullah were travelling in a convoy after completing a programme at Pos Titom when they noticed a vehicle ahead of their convoy at Kampung Sop.
She said they noticed BN candidate for the Cameron Highlands Ramli Md Nor’s vehicle which was earlier at the programme in Titom had also stopped in the village.
“There were several vehicles along the stretch and someone mentioned that a dark-coloured vehicle which parked at the front belonged to the state government, and that was also spotted at various locations since morning. So we decided to stop next to their vehicle and verify.
“When asked, the driver replied they were not part of the BN convoy and that they came to collect the gong (musical instrument) for an event,” she said.
Maznah said an MIC member who was part of the BN’s convoy then walked towards the vehicle before he peeled the Jalur Gemilang which was pasted on the vehicle and noticed a PH flag below (second layer).
“When he removed the PH flag, we noticed the vehicle belonged to the Pahang Forestry Department. When asked why they had put the PH flag, the driver replied “saya tak tahu”(I do not know), ” she said refuting claims that they had ordered the vehicle to stop before inspecting it.
Maznah said some time later the vehicle left the area and they returned to their homestay in Pos Lenjang before Tengku Zulpuri confronted them on the “flag tearing” incident.
The former Deputy Human Resources Minister said later when they reached Sungai Koyan town after midnight, they were shocked to learn that Ramli’s vehicle was also attacked while in the settlement.
She said the Rompin Umno division secretary Zahari Mohamad had lodged a police report at the Sungai Koyan police station as they feared the safety of their election machinery throughout the campaign.
