KUALA LUMPUR: PAS’ Abdul Hadi Awang insists that a motion of no-confidence against the prime minister is in the pipeline, despite Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders dismissing it as an attempt to cause division in the ruling coalition.
“When it will come and who are the candidates, only time will tell,” he said in a dialogue session at Universiti Malaya last night.
But the PAS president said his party was not part of any efforts to bring such a motion to Parliament.
“PAS is not part of any attempt to bring a no-confidence vote, but it is the work of certain parties,” he said.
Still, Hadi said there was a disagreement among PH leaders on who will replace Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister.
He said his party would back any candidate who will “implement Islam”.
“We will choose anyone who is better for the Muslim community and the nation’s future,” he said.
Previously, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan spoke of a plan to bring a no-confidence vote against Mahathir, and pledged the party’s support in the event that such a vote takes place.
PH leaders have dismissed the claim, but Mahathir said it remained to be seen if PAS would support him.
“I will wait and see if there is a vote of no confidence, (and) if PAS will support me or not,” he said last month.
At the same event last night, another PAS leader said efforts to bring a no-confidence motion against Mahathir had been thwarted after PAS came out openly on the matter.
“We exposed it, and they went into panic. They attacked Hadi and PAS for leaking it. If not for us, they would have gone ahead with it,” he said.
