KUCHING: With the dry El Nino spell likely to last till May, local authorities here have been urged to brace for shortages of water in the state.
Deputy Chief Minister Douglas Uggah Embas said they had issued a directive to various local councils to be prepared with the necessary vehicles and allocations for water distribution.
“We have learnt from our mistakes last year and have now instructed all relevant government offices to deliver water to the affected villages within six hours after receiving complaints,” he told reporters after chairing a meeting of the State Disaster Management Committee here today.
According to him, several places and villages in Sarawak have started to experience water shortages.
Douglas said water tanks have been sent to villagers experiencing shortages and the priority now is to fill up all the water tanks starting today.
“It is important for the people requesting help to be provided with water supply.”
He said the water level at all Sarawak reservoirs and dams was at a satisfactory level at present.
Uggah advised people to stop open burning activities during this dry season and warned that action would be taken against offenders. - FMT
