Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has ticked off Gerakan for allegedly hoping for a by-election in the state.
Chow said it is not nice for the opposition party to be looking forward to a by-election while planning to contest in all such seats in Penang.
"It is not pleasant to hope for a by-election here. There was a court case on one in Tasek Gelugor but the matter has been settled. It has passed," Chow said at a press conference in Komtar.
"A by-election mostly takes place after resignation or death, so it is not so pleasant to hope for such things," Chow added.
Asked his view if Gerakan can make a comeback in the political arena, Chow said it all depended on the people.
"The people can put a party in power or take power away from it. We are an active democratic country and we have seen it happen after 61 years," he said.
Chow was asked to comment on Gerakan's plan to contest in future by-elections in Penang.
The party also plans to battle in the seats it had lost in the 14th general election, its president Dominic Lau said.
Quoted in theSun, Lau said the decision was made at the party’s recent central working committee meeting, as Gerakan aims to make headway in seats it is familiar with.
Lau said this at a press conference after attending the party’s 51st anniversary at its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
