NIBONG TEBAL: Police are investigating Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng for sedition over his statement last week describing the PAS-Umno alliance as a declaration of war against non-Muslims.
Inspector-General of Police Fuzi Harun said 58 reports were filed against the DAP leader.
Fuzi said Lim might be called for questioning “when the time comes” but said as for now, there was no necessity to do so.
“We will record necessary statements to complete our probe to be passed to the prosecutor’s office for the next course of action,” he said at an event in Nibong Tebal here today.
Fuzi also dismissed claims that police were “slow” in responding to the matter, saying investigations began as soon as reports were received.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 505(c) of the Penal Code for making a statement with intent to incite or which is likely to incite any class or community of persons to commit any offence against any other class or community of persons.
The offence carries a two-year jail sentence or fine or both.
Last Wednesday, Lim had told Malaysiakini that the newly-formed alliance of Umno and PAS would affect the harmony between races enjoyed since Merdeka. He described the alliance as a “declaration of war against non-Malays”.
The news portal later corrected Lim’s statement in the same story, with Lim himself reportedly telling reporters that he would not comment and told them to read the updated statement in the story. - FMT
