Croc sighted in Kalabakan River, public advised to beware

KOTA KINABALU: A crocodile has been sighted in the Kalabakan River near Tawau, and wildlife officials have put up signs warning the public of the reptile’s presence.

Members of the public have been urged to take note and refrain from swimming or carrying out any activity in the areas where signs were put up to prevent any untoward incident.

“We received information about the presence of a crocodile there at about 11am Friday (March 8) and will be setting up traps to catch it,” said wildlife officer Sailun Aris Saturday (March 9).

He said photos of a crocodile believed to be taken at the Kalabakan River had been circulating on social media.

He said similar signs had also been put up at the Tawau River area.

Sailun said several other traps had been set up at a nearby housing area on Jalan Sin Onn to capture two crocodiles said to lurking in the area.

“We have set traps there since Feb 27 but all we have caught were fish and monitor lizards,” he said.

He said new bait had been placed on March 6 in hopes of capturing the reptiles.- Star
