PARLIAMENT | The Dewan Rakyat will debate an emergency motion tabled by Anwar Ibrahim (Harapan-Port Dickson) to condemn the tragic mosque shooting incidents in New Zealand.
Speaker Mohamad Ariff Mohd Yusof ruled for the motion to be debated for one hour from 4.30pm today, after deciding the matter was specific, urgent and of public interest.
Anwar said the Parliament must state its stand in being against the terrorist attacks on the Friday prayer congregations at the Al-Noor and Linwood mosques; extend condolences to all victims and their families as well as record its support for the stern measures undertaken by New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
"This motion is a matter of public interest as the incident involves issues between Muslims and those of other religions, which sparked brutal acts of violence.
"This motion should also be given urgency, as its implication could threaten peace and harmony if left unprevented," Anwar said when tabling his motion.
Last Friday, a gunman killed 50 people when he opened fire at the two mosques in the city of Christchurch.
A Malaysian teenager remains missing following the attacks and Wisma Putra previously confirmed that search efforts are still ongoing.
The missing Malaysian is 17-year-old Mohd Haziq Mohd Tarmizi, according to Bernama.
Haziq’s father Mohd Tarmizi Shuib, 46 (from Kedah), Rahimi Ahmad, 39 (from Penang) and Mohd Nazril Hisham Omar, 46 (from Kelantan), are the three injured Malaysians.
The main suspect of the shootings, 28-year-old Australian citizen Brenton Harrison Tarrant, was charged with murder on Saturday.
