Malaysian Airlines Bhd (MAB) has been bailed out thrice in the past, but continues to struggle, pointed out Plus Bhd chairperson Mohd Sheriff Mohd Kassim.
Therefore, he said the government should look into the growing calls for the national airline to be shut down.
“More and more people are speaking along those lines,” he told reporters at the sidelines of the Malaysian Strategic Financial Outlook Forum in Petaling Jaya today.
“There are a lot of people saying we should re-examine whether we still need a national airline. We need to look into this.
“You must remember MAS has been bailed out once, twice and three times before, and it was never successful.
“After each bailout, we (MAS) are alright for two or three years, then it ( financial problem) starts again. It shows that it is not easy for MAS to become profitable,” he added.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the government is open to studying various options regarding the future of MAS, including shutting down the national flag carrier.
"I think it is a very serious matter. To shut down the national airlines.
"Whether we should shut it down or sell it off or refinance it? All these things are open to the government to decide on," he added.
Meanwhile, Mohd Sherrif, speaking on corporate reform, said there must be a serious discussion on whether Malaysia needs a slew of GLCs.
He added that there should not be political interference in the running of GLCs in order for them to function properly. - Mkini
