Improve cops’ welfare too as you implement IPCMC, IGP urges Putrajaya

KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun has urged the government to consider royal commission of inquiry (RCI) recommendations for the welfare of police personnel when it tables the long-awaited IPCMC Bill in Parliament.
“We are pleading to the government to bring in the welfare issues, as has been suggested by the RCI in 2005.
“Among the 125 recommendations, there are a lot of things involving the interest of PDRM (Royal Malaysian Police) which have not been highlighted yet,” he told reporters after attending the Excellence Awards ceremony at Bukit Aman today.
In 2005, the Royal Commission to Enhance the Operations and Management of the Police was formed following a number of custodial deaths.
It submitted a list of 125 recommendations, including the formation of an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC), a body to investigate police misconduct and take necessary action.
Other recommendations were about instituting reforms in police department’s doctrine, functioning, organisation, and management. It also recommended improvements to the working and living conditions of police personnel.
Previously, Liew Vui Keong, a minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, had said the setting up IPCMC was in line with Pakatan Harapan’s election manifesto to tackle and investigate matters concerning police integrity and misconduct. - FMT
