‘Lavish lifestyle’ remarks irk PAS MPs in Dewan Rakyat

KUALA LUMPUR: PAS MPs were up in arms in the Dewan Rakyat following a claim by a PH leader that some of the Islamist party leaders had millions of ringgit in their accounts and even owned luxury vehicles.
Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir (PH-Johor Bahru) said that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had earlier seized some of the assets owned by these leaders.
The Dewan Rakyat was thrown into chaos for some time, with PAS MPs urging Akmal and RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) to retract their statements and refrain from further slandering the party.
The Johor Bahru MP had said he had read news reports about PAS leaders with RM1 million in their bank accounts and several luxury vehicles, such as Toyota Vellfire, Porsche and Range Rover, valued at RM2.3 million, were seized.
“I would like to ask the minister concerned to confirm if there are any PAS leaders being probed under the anti-money laundering act.
“Also, in this house, I wish to repeat my past stance and challenge all Umno and PAS MPs to openly declare their assets.
“This will be good as it will ensure integrity, accountability and ensure transparency between leaders and the rakyat.
“Even if you want to get married, you must be honest and transparent first,” he said.
Rayer questioned if the recent union between Umno and PAS is an indicator that both are involved in corruption.
“PAS is sinking. Umno is sinking. Both are already sinking,” he said.
The MPs demanded that Akmal reveal the names of the leaders he was referring to.
“Please state the name of that leader. Don’t speak if you don’t have any solid proof,” Che Abdullah Mat Nawi (PAS-Tumpat) said.
Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali (PAS-Kuala Terengganu) also asked the PKR Youth chief to name the person.
“Just tell us who he is. Who is this PAS leader? Answer this.
“MACC has already confirmed no money entered into PAS accounts, so what are you talking about?”
Jalaludin Alias (BN-Jelebu) said the PH government was afraid of the close cooperation between Umno and PAS.
“Why are you so afraid of Umno and PAS? Why? We will continue winning and winning with this union. Why are you so afraid?”
Hitting back, Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid (PH-Kapar) said they were not afraid of the Umno-PAS union, but were rather frightened of the thieves and robbers among them.
Other PAS MPs, namely Awang Hashim (PAS-Pendang) and Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PAS-Pengkalan Chepa), repeated calls for Akmal to retract his remarks, leaving the lower house in a state of chaos.

Akmal retracted his statement later after Speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof ordered him to do so but maintained his stance that PAS and Umno leaders should openly declare their assets. - FMT
