Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa has brushed off claims that the party had planned to drop its lawsuits against the defected lawmakers who joined Pakatan Harapan due to exorbitant legal cost.
He was referring to yesterday's report by The Malaysian Insight which quoted a source as saying the party's acting president Mohamad Hasan was more interested in efforts to rebuild Umno.
It also cited the cost of undertaking the legal actions as one of the factors taken into consideration.
"I'd like to rectify that it's not true Umno is retracting the summonses against former (Umno) MPs because of the high cost," Annuar told reporters at Parliament today.
The Ketereh MP said the party will continue its legal actions against assemblypersons and MPs who had defected.
"There are about 30 of them, including 20 from Sabah who will be hauled (to court)," he said.
Annuar added that to avoid confusion regarding the matter, he held discussions with Mohamad, treasurer Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and lawyers representing the party.
During the Umno general assembly in September last year, party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (who is on leave) said summonses had already been sent to several MPs.
"We are demanding they pay back costs, and they must also vacate the seats.
"They didn't win on their names, but they won because of Umno and BN. They no longer have the moral ground to be elected representatives," he had said.
Umno, which won 54 parliamentary seats in the GE14 last year, is now down to 37 seats after the defections. - Mkini
